Abstract
Corporate fraud remains a persistent challenge in Cameroon’s public sector, weakening public trust, draining national resources, and undermining sustainable development. Despite the existence of regulatory frameworks and oversight institutions such as the Supreme State Audit Office of Cameroon, cases of financial mismanagement and corruption continue to surface. This study examines the role of forensic auditing as a practical tool for preventing, detecting, and deterring corporate fraud within public institutions in Cameroon.
The research explores how forensic audit techniques—such as data analysis, investigative procedures, litigation support, and fraud risk assessment—can strengthen internal controls and improve accountability. Using a combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches, including interviews with audit professionals and analysis of documented fraud cases, the study evaluates the effectiveness of forensic auditing compared to traditional auditing methods.
Findings suggest that while conventional audits focus primarily on compliance and financial reporting accuracy, forensic auditing adopts a more investigative and preventive approach that can significantly reduce opportunities for fraud. However, the study also identifies challenges such as limited technical expertise, inadequate legal enforcement, and insufficient institutional independence.
The study concludes that forensic auditing can serve as a strong mechanism for combating corporate fraud in Cameroon’s public sector if supported by proper legal frameworks, professional training, and institutional reforms. It recommends increased capacity building, policy reforms, and stronger collaboration between anti-corruption bodies and audit institutions to enhance transparency and accountability.
